At the 2017 Microsoft Ignite conference, SharePoint took center stage for a while with a slew of announcements about an upcoming new version and incredible new features.

While it’ll still be a while before SharePoint 2019 is ready for the masses, it’s still worth taking a look at some of the changes, so you’ll be ready to decide if it’s right for your business or not.

When To Expect It

SharePoint 2019 preview arrives in mid-2018. However, many new features and improvements are coming as early as late 2017. While a final release date hasn’t been set yet, we’ll know more once the preview comes out, but odds are, late 2018 to early 2019 is a good estimate.

On-Premises

A major SharePoint 2019 announcement is the arrival of SharePoint Server 2019 on-premises. While only 35% of licenses are on-premises, Microsoft is still focused on providing businesses with both online and on-premise versions. The on-premise version is expected to have features, such as:

  • PowerApps integration
  • Modern UI
  • Communication sites
  • Team news
  • NextGen OneDrive Sync Client

Hub Sites

Organize related sites with hub sites. This feature helps create a more cohesive way to manage search and activity among similar sites. You’re able to change them as needed. Expect these new changes sometime in early 2018.

Admin Center

Administrators get more control than ever before with the new Admin Center. View all sites and activity in one place. It’s easier to find settings and create better policies.

Migration Tool

SharePoint 2019 also features a migration tool to automate the migration process to Office 365. The tool moves files from SharePoint document libraries and file servers. It’s a much more efficient process than ever before.

Additional Improvements

In addition to SharePoint 2019, SharePoint will be getting some new features and upgrades over the next year. Some features your business, employees and customers might love include:

  • The new Yammer web part for improved communication and conversations
  • Create rich, dynamic content
  • Create custom-built forms with PowerApps
  • Work with larger lists and libraries with predictive indexing
  • Search easier than before and see previews of files to find exactly what you’re looking for

We’ll know more as further announcements are made, but for now, this is what you have to look forward to with SharePoint 2019 and other SharePoint updates.
